Universo a tre dimensioni.

Nel post “Universo a due dimensioni” abbiamo visto come gli abitanti di Flatlandia fossero convinti che non potesse esistere un mondo diverso da quello piatto. Eretico era chi ipotizzava l’esistenza di un mondo diverso, a tre dimensioni. E la “scienza”, si sa, è sempre stata ostacolata dalla “fede”, perché la “conoscenza” porta allo smantellamento progressivo della “verità teologica e trascendente”.

Flatlandia, per noi che viviamo in un universo a tre dimensioni, è solo una favola. Vero! Ma molto istruttiva.

Anche noi, come gli abitanti di Flatlandia, siamo “costretti” in una visione molto limitata e distorta della realtà. Noi sosteniamo infatti di vivere in un mondo tridimensionale. Facciamo allora alcune piccole considerazioni o puntualizzazioni:

1. La terza dimensione, quella dello “spazio”, a noi umani, come a gran parte del mondo animale e a tutto il mondo vegetale, è preclusa, perché solo gli uccelli che volano ne usufruiscono appieno. Quindi, dal punto di vista della fruizione, noi umani siamo come gli abitanti di Flatlandia, siamo liberi di muoverci solo in un mondo piatto. Per muoverci nella terza dimensione abbiamo dovuto ingegnarci (a partire da Icaro) ed inventare qualcosa che ci permettesse di farlo, gli aerei. E tuttavia lo possiamo fare solo temporaneamente, mai definitivamente. Certo, rispetto ai flatlandesi abbiamo un vantaggio: possiamo riconoscere le forme, visto che abbiamo uno spessore che loro non hanno. Concludendo potremmo dire, da questo punto di vista, che in realtà viviamo in un universo a due dimensioni e mezzo.
2. La considerazione del punto precedente, cioè la impossibilità per noi umani di muoverci liberamente nella terza dimensione, ci porta dritti ad un’altra considerazione. C’è in effetti un altro impedimento nella nostra vita ed è il fatto che non possiamo “fermarci”. Intendo dire che non siamo in grado di rimanere come siamo, perché invecchiamo. Ed invecchiamo perché esiste un’altra dimensione che non siamo assolutamente in grado di gestire: il tempo. Ci possiamo muovere liberamente in due dimensioni, la tecnologia ci aiuta a muoverci in tre dimensioni, ma non siamo ancora in grado di muoverci nella quarta dimensione che è il “tempo”. Lo faremo quando qualcuno avrà costruito la “macchina del tempo”.

Concludendo: siamo immersi in un mondo quadridimensionale ma siamo liberi solo in un mondo a due dimensioni e mezzo.

A three-dimensional Universe.

In the post “A two-dimensional Universe” we saw how the inhabitants of Flatland were convinced that cannot exist a world different from the one flat. Heretic who had assumed the existence of a different world in three dimensions. And the “science”, you know, has always been hampered by “faith”, because the “knowledge” leads to the gradual dismantling of the “theological truth and transcendent.”

Flatland, for us who live in a three-dimensional universe, is just a fairy tale. True! But very informative.

Like the inhabitants of Flatland, we are “forced” in a very limited and distorted view of reality. We argue in fact  to live in a three-dimensional world. So, let’s make a few considerations or clarifications:

1. The third dimension, that of “space”, for us humans, as for most of the animal and vegetable world, is precluded because only the birds that fly will use them to the fullest. So, from the point of view of utilization, we humans are like the inhabitants of Flatland, we are free to move only in a flat world. To move into the third dimension we had to invent (starting from Icarus) something that would allow us to do so, the planes. And yet we can do it only temporarily, not definitively. Certainly, compared to Flatlanders we have an advantage: we can recognize shapes, since we have a thickness that they do not. In conclusion we can say, from this point of view, that in fact we live in a universe in two dimensions and a half.

2. The consideration of the above, ie the impossibility of humans to move freely into the third dimension brings us to another consideration. There is actually another obstacle in our lives and the fact that we can not “stop”. I mean that we are not able to stay as we are, because we age. And age because there is another dimension that we are absolutely not able to handle: time. We can move freely in two dimensions, the technology helps us to move in three dimensions, but we are not yet able to move into the fourth dimension that is “time”. We’ll do it if and when someone has built a “time machine”.

In conclusion: we are immersed in a “four-dimensional” world but we are free only in a two-dimensional world and a half.
